The summit of the plateau is the origin of many weather systems - one reason why the weather (and by extension, astronomical observations) are good for so many days of the year at Ridge A. The unusual combination of extreme cold and days of low wind leave the surface at this site covered with "ice ferns" which appear to grow out of the ground, a beautiful and unusual phenomenon.
