Snow is constantly being deposited across the continent as water vapour precipitates from the air, and gradually the ice sheets are spreading towards the coast under their own weight. Two older stations were buried prior to the current elevated station, which is designed to be jacked up by one storey every twenty years. Many older buildings, such as the power plant and vehicle maintenance facilities shown, are now effectively underground. Small buildings can be built on skis and dragged up to the new ground level, but large buildings can only be jacked up or built on stands to buy time.
